A Former Grizz, Great Blog

Posted 6/30 at 8:30 AM

There’s been a lot of controversy lately about blogging: is it really “journalism” or is it just blowing off steam with rumors and opinion?

Blogs are like everything else in this world; some are laughably bad, others mediocre and others fantastic. Chip Crain and the guys at 3 Shades of Blue take their blogging seriously. Sure, there’s a healthy dose of opinion (the cornerstone of any blog worth its salt), but Chip’s also gotten Michael Heisley and Chris Wallace on the record and transcribed the entire conversations so that there was no danger of anything being misquoted or taken out of context.

I also like Beyond the Arc in the Memphis Flyer. Chris is one of the most thoughtful basketball fans I know. He’s not given to “shoot from the hip” opinions that leave you scratching your head.

But if you’re looking for some great insight not only into the game of basketball, but into the mind of a coach, check out former Grizzlies’ assistant coach Eric Musselman’s blog. It’s fantastic in that it transcends the typical rating of players, rumors and gossip and really talks about leadership, coaching and sports psychology. It’s a shame that Muss hasn’t been able to make it work as a head coach in the NBA. He’s a fun guy to be around, very intense, focused and driven—just like his dad Bill Musselman who also coached in the NBA.

Muss is a real character in that he’s a workout fiend. The over/under on daily workouts for him was three and you’d better never take the under. He was also an impatient traveler—first on the bus, first on the plane and first to complain if things weren’t moving fast enough for him. He also coined the term “Fun Bus” for the bus that carries our TV crew to and from the airport. When things were going bad for the Grizzlies a couple of years ago, Muss wanted no part of riding on the team bus. Instead he said, “I wanna ride on the Fun Bus with you guys.” The name has stuck since our bus is the home of inside jokes and generally silly conversations such as reciting whole scenes from “Bull Durham” or “Major League.”

But I digress. The point here is that if you’re interested in the intersection of basketball, leadership, coaching and sports psychology, check out Muss’ blog.
